Alcorn State BravesvsSouthern Miss Golden Eagles
ALCN 3/USM 49
Things to say
Southern Miss handled Alcorn State 49-3 at home to open the season 1-0.
01
opener
Southern Miss ran Alcorn State off the field, 49-3. It was over by halftime. Alcorn just couldn't move the ball all night.
02
key player
Steven Robinson was a load — 23 carries, 123 yards, three touchdowns. Straight-up smashmouth, they fed him in the red zone every time.
03
hot take
That 180 passing yards is misleading. Southern Miss didn't need to throw it, they were grinding clock and running downhill the whole second half.
04
deep cut
Alcorn's quarterback threw four picks. Four. You're not beating anybody handing it back to the defense like that.
05
exit
Cupcake opener though — we'll find out what Southern Miss really is when the schedule gets real.
The recap
Southern Miss smashed Alcorn State 49-3, and this one was over before halftime. Steven Robinson was the workhorse, grinding out 123 yards and punching in three touchdowns on the ground while the defense absolutely feasted.
The turning point? There wasn't one so much as a slow-motion pileup: Jaylon Tolbert threw four picks, Alcorn couldn't move the ball past the field goal they scratched out early, and USM just kept pouring it on.
Golden Eagles opened the season by covering anything you could've bought.
