Austin Peay GovernorsvsVanderbilt Commodores
APSU 9/VAN 28
Things to say
Vanderbilt beat Austin Peay 28-9 at home to open the season 1-0.
01
opener
Vandy handled Austin Peay 28-9. Never really in doubt. The Commodores just kept the pressure on and the FCS squad couldn't keep up.
02
key player
Blaze Berlowitz was efficient — 11-of-16 for 149 and even punched one in on the ground. Quiet numbers, but he ran the offense clean.
03
hot take
Honestly the defense won this one. Issa Ouattara had two sacks and they smothered Austin Peay all night. The offense didn't need to do much.
04
deep cut
That Josiah Broxton 27-yard punt return for a score in the fourth was the dagger. Special teams flipped the field all game.
05
exit
Cupcake opener, though. We'll find out what Vandy really is once the SEC schedule kicks in.
The recap
Vanderbilt never really sweated this one, grinding out a 28-9 win over an overmatched Austin Peay in the season opener. Blaze Berlowitz did a little of everything — 149 yards through the air and a 7-yard scamper into the end zone — while Sedrick Alexander punched in another on the ground.
Austin Peay just couldn't move the ball, scraping together nine points on a couple field goals and a fluky defensive PAT conversion. The dagger was Josiah Broxton taking a punt back 27 yards to the house to open the second half, and after that it was academic.
