Toronto Blue JaysvsTampa Bay Rays
TOR 5/TB 1
Things to say
The Blue Jays beat the Rays 5-1 at Tropicana Field on Wednesday.
01
opener
Jays took it 5-1 down in Tampa. Toronto jumped on them early and never really looked back. The Rays bats just went cold.
02
key player
Whoever Toronto ran out there on the mound had his stuff working. One run over the day is a get-it-done start, and the WHIP was ugly for Tampa all afternoon.
03
hot take
Rays are 76-51 and still couldn't scratch more than one across at home. That lineup goes quiet way too often for a division contender.
04
deep cut
Getaway day at the Trop and Tampa's heart of the order did nothing. When the middle guys don't touch base, one run is all you get.
05
exit
Toronto's still under .500 at 63-66, but they'll take the road W. On to the next series.
The recap
Toronto walked into the Trop on a getaway day and did the dirty work, plating five while the Rays' bats went quiet for a lone run. Tampa Bay's offense never got going against Toronto's staff, stranding whatever it managed to scrape together and never really threatening.
The 5-1 final was a clean road win for the Blue Jays, the kind where the pitching sets the tone early and the lineup does just enough. Tough afternoon for a Rays club that's still sitting pretty at 76-51, but this one belonged to Toronto start to finish.
