St. Louis CardinalsvsArizona Diamondbacks
STL 5/ARI 4
Things to say
The Cardinals edged the Diamondbacks 5-4 in Arizona.
01
opener
One-run game out in the desert, Cards took it 5-4. Back and forth the whole way. Arizona had the tying run on late and just couldn't cash it.
02
key player
St. Louis got the heart of the order going at the right time. Somebody in that lineup left the yard, and that's the ballgame in a game this tight.
03
hot take
Arizona's manager went to the pen too early again. You give away a one-run game like that and it's on the guy in the dugout, not the arms.
04
deep cut
Chase Field with the roof closed plays like a launching pad, so 4-5 runs is actually kind of a pitcher's day there. Both starters got into their stuff early.
05
exit
Getaway day tomorrow before they hit the road, so we'll see if the Cards can grab the series. I'm out.
The recap
Cardinals grabbed a tight one in the desert, edging Arizona 5-4 to keep rolling toward the front of the pack at 51-45. It stayed a one-run knife fight all night, the kind of game where every trip to the pen felt like holding your breath.
St. Louis did just enough to squeeze across the winning run and hand the bullpen a lead it wouldn't cough up.
Arizona drops to 49-48 and has to be sick about letting a getaway-day squeaker slip away at home.
