St. Louis CardinalsvsCincinnati Reds
STL 5/CIN 6
Things to say
The Reds walked off the Cardinals 6-5 in 10 innings at Great American Ball Park.
01
opener
Reds took it 6-5 in extras. Went to the tenth knotted up and Cincy pushed the winner across at home. Cardinals had it right there and let it slip.
02
key player
Whoever came up in the tenth for the Reds is the story. That's the ballgame right there, walk-off runner in from second on a getaway-day loss for St. Louis.
03
hot take
Cardinals lost that one in the bullpen. You don't blow a lead in extras on the road and blame the bats. That's a bad loss for a team clinging to .500.
04
deep cut
Both these teams are sitting under .500 in mid-August. This isn't two contenders slugging it out, it's a coin-flip in a bandbox where the ball flies out of the yard.
05
exit
Anyway, extra-inning games are a grind. Curious if the Cardinals can bounce back and take the series.
The recap
The Reds walked it off in extras, edging the Cardinals 6-5 in ten at Great American to steal a nailbiter. St.
Louis had this one within reach, but couldn't put it away in regulation and the bullpen let it slip once free baseball started. Cincinnati kept clawing, and in the bottom of the tenth they pushed across the winner to send the home crowd out happy.
Getaway-day heartbreak for the Cards, who leave town having coughed up a game they should've closed.
