Houston Christian HuskiesvsRice Owls
HCU 3/RICE 31
Things to say
Rice beat Houston Christian 31-3 at Rice Stadium.
01
opener
Rice handled their business at home, 31-3. Never really in doubt. HCU couldn't move the ball all night.
02
key player
Tyvonn Byars was the guy — 16 carries, 104 yards. That's how you set the tone, just grind it out on the ground.
03
hot take
Rice threw for 17 yards and still won by four scores. Tells you everything about that HCU offense.
04
deep cut
Chibby Nwajuaku had two sacks and led the team in tackles. Guy was living in the backfield.
05
exit
Nice tune-up win. We'll see what they've got once the schedule toughens up.
The recap
Houston Christian nabbed an early field goal and then never sniffed the end zone again, getting steamrolled 31-3 at Rice Stadium. Rice leaned smashmouth all night, with Quinton Jackson punching in a pair of short rushing scores and Tyvonn Byars grinding out 104 yards on the ground.
The real story was the Owls defense, which flat-out suffocated HCU — Cutter Stewart went 6-of-17 with a pick, Chibby Nwajuaku got home for two sacks, and the Huskies couldn't move the ball once that opening drive stalled. Rice reeled off 31 straight and cruised.
