Miami MarlinsvsWashington Nationals
MIA 4/WSH 5
Things to say
The Nationals beat the Marlins 5-4 in 10 innings at Nationals Park.
01
opener
Nats walked it off in the tenth, 5-4. Free runner on second, one swing and it's over. Marlins had to be sick leaving that one in D.C.
02
key player
Whoever came up in the tenth for Washington is the story. That's the kind of at-bat that flips a whole homestand.
03
hot take
Miami's bullpen has been shaky all year, and extra innings on the road is exactly where it bites you. That loss is on the pen, not the bats.
04
deep cut
Both these teams are basically .500 dice rolls right now, so a one-run extra-innings game between them is about the most on-brand thing possible.
05
exit
Anyway, they run it back tomorrow, and a Marlins club that just blew one in extras usually comes out chippy. I'll take the bounce-back.
The recap
Free baseball at Nationals Park, and Washington sent everybody home happy with a 5-4 walk-off in the tenth. The Marlins clawed back to knot it up late and force extras, but once that ghost runner slid over to second in the bottom of the tenth, the Nats only needed one swing to end it.
Miami's bullpen couldn't strand the go-ahead run when it mattered, and a getaway day turned sour in a hurry. Washington steals one it probably had no business winning, while the Marlins let a coin-flip slip through their fingers.
