New York MetsvsCleveland Guardians
NYM 6/CLE 5
Things to say
The Mets beat the Guardians 6-5 in 10 innings at Progressive Field.
01
opener
Mets stole one in Cleveland, 6-5 in extras. Guardians had the lead late and let it slip. That's a rough one to lose at home.
02
key player
New York's guys in the heart of the order did the damage — this was a lineup win, not one bat. Somebody in that middle third kept the line moving all night.
03
hot take
Cleveland's manager went to the pen too early again. You've got a starter cruising and you pull him — that's how a one-run game gets away in the tenth.
04
deep cut
The ghost runner rule flat-out decided this. Mets pushed the free runner across in the tenth and the Guardians couldn't answer. Whole game turned on that little wrinkle.
05
exit
Anyway, it's a getaway day — we'll see if the Mets can carry it into the next series.
The recap
Mets stole one in Cleveland, grinding out a 6-5 win in extra innings on a getaway day. This thing was knotted up late and went to the tenth, where New York pushed across the run that mattered and made it stand.
The bullpen had to slam the door with the tying run breathing down its neck, and they got the job done. Ugly, tense, and exactly the kind of road win a 49-66 club needs to feel good about.
