New York MetsvsTampa Bay Rays
NYM 3/TB 2
Things to say
The Mets edged the Rays 3-2 at Tropicana Field.
01
opener
Mets stole one at the Trop, 3-2. Real grind-it-out game, nobody left the yard early. Came down to the last couple innings.
02
key player
Give it to the Mets arms. Somebody got into his stuff and kept the heart of that Rays order off the board — that's how you win a 3-2 game on the road.
03
hot take
Rays are 82-55 and they just dropped one to a team efourteen under .500. That's the kind of loss that nags you in September.
04
deep cut
Low-scoring one in a dome, so the bullpen was everything. Whoever the manager leaned on out of the pen held it — no walk-off drama needed.
05
exit
Anyway, Rays are still sitting pretty in the standings. I wanna see if the Mets can actually string a couple together now.
The recap
Mets grinded out a 3-2 win in a getaway-day pitcher's duel at the Trop, the kind of low-scoring scrap where every baserunner felt like a big deal. Nobody left the yard by the truckload here — it was station-to-station baseball, timely knocks, and a bullpen that had to nail down the tight lead.
Tampa's a first-place club at 82-55 and they still couldn't scratch across more than two, so the Mets' arms deserve the game ball for keeping the heart of that order quiet. New York's been buried under .500 all year, but on this night they punched up and stole one from a contender.
