Washington NationalsvsPhiladelphia Phillies
WSH 10/PHI 4
Things to say
Washington beat Philadelphia 10-4 in 11 innings at Citizens Bank Park.
01
opener
Nats took it in extras, 10-4. Was a one-run game into the ninth, then the wheels came off. Philly's pen just had nothing left.
02
key player
The top of Washington's order was locked in all night — kept turning the lineup over and made Philly pay every time they got a runner on.
03
hot take
Honestly the Phillies lost that in the eighth. You don't burn your best arm in a tie on the road and hope the rest hold.
04
deep cut
Tie ballgame in the eleventh and the Nats bullpen slammed the door — that's a 56-win club out-relieving a contender on a getaway day.
05
exit
Anyway, Philly's gotta shake it off quick — they've got the rest of this series to make it right.
The recap
The Nationals went into Citizens Bank Park and stole one, hanging a 10-4 final on the Phillies in extra innings. This was tied late and looked like a coin flip until Washington's bats woke up in the eleventh and blew the doors off — a six-run margin in an extra-inning game means somebody's bullpen got torched.
Philly's pen had nothing left in the tank by the time the eleventh rolled around, and the heart of the Nats order made them pay. Rough getaway day for the Phillies giving up a crooked number that late.
