New York City FCvsToronto FC
NYC 1/TOR 1
Things to say
New York City FC and Toronto FC played to a 1-1 draw at BMO Field.
01
opener
NYC went up to Toronto and left with a 1-1 draw. Honestly felt like a game both teams settled for. Point on the road isn't the worst thing.
02
key player
Matt Freese was the story in the NYC goal, five saves to keep them level. Without him that's a loss, plain and simple.
03
hot take
Toronto's sitting at 5-10-7 and still can't put away a home game like this. That's not bad luck anymore, that's just who they are.
04
deep cut
Walker Zimmerman had seven defensive interventions for Toronto. Guy was basically holding the back line together by himself.
05
exit
NYC's still in the mix for a playoff spot, so I'm watching how they close out the run-in.
The recap
New York City FC and Toronto FC split the points in a 1-1 draw at BMO Field, the kind of game where nobody walks away happy. Both sides found the net once and then couldn't crack it again, with the two goalkeepers doing a lot of the heavy lifting.
Matt Freese was the busier of the two keepers, turning away five shots to keep NYC level, while Mitja Ilenic mopped up everything in front of him with ten defensive interventions. A point apiece keeps both teams treading water, and neither will feel like they got the better of it.
