San Diego PadresvsCleveland Guardians
SD 7/CLE 5
Things to say
The San Diego Padres beat the Cleveland Guardians 7-5 on the road at Progressive Field.
01
opener
Padres took it 7-5 in Cleveland. San Diego's bats showed up early and the Guardians spent all night chasing. Felt over before it really was.
02
key player
The heart of San Diego's order carried it — a couple of runners driven in and one that left the yard. That's the whole ballgame right there.
03
hot take
Cleveland's manager went to the pen way too early. You've got a lead like that, you let your starter finish the inning.
04
deep cut
Guardians actually clawed back a couple late, but they stranded the tying run twice. Baseball punishes you for that.
05
exit
At 66-57 the Padres are rolling. I'll be watching to see if Cleveland answers back tomorrow — getaway day usually gets weird.
The recap
Padres went into Cleveland and grabbed a 7-5 win to keep pace in the wild card race. San Diego's bats did the damage on the road, staying a step ahead of a Guardians club that just can't climb over .500 right now.
Cleveland kept clawing but never got the big swing when they needed it. Getaway day, San Diego takes it and heads home feeling good.
