San Diego PadresvsNew York Mets
SD 5/NYM 2
Things to say
The Padres beat the Mets 5-2 at Citi Field.
01
opener
Padres took it 5-2 over the Mets. San Diego just kept the line moving all night. Mets bats went quiet after the middle innings.
02
key player
San Diego's arms were the story — their starter got into his stuff early and handed it off with a lead, and the bullpen slammed the door. That's how a contender wins on the road.
03
hot take
Mets are 57-70 for a reason. Two runs at home? The heart of the order has to give you more than that.
04
deep cut
Watch the run differential — Padres put up five without needing the long ball, just chipping away. That travels better in October than a boom-or-bust lineup.
05
exit
Padres are rolling at 68-59, so I'll be curious how they handle the next series. Anyway, back to work.
The recap
The Padres rolled into Citi Field and left with a 5-2 win, and honestly the Mets never really got going at the plate. San Diego's bats did enough damage against the heart of the order to build a cushion, and the bullpen slammed the door late instead of letting New York claw back.
The Mets scratched across a couple but couldn't string anything together when it mattered. Padres keep humming along at 68-59 while New York's tough stretch rolls on.
