San Diego PadresvsCincinnati Reds
SD 5/CIN 0
Things to say
The Padres shut out the Reds 5-0 in Cincinnati.
01
opener
Padres took it 5-0 in Cincy. San Diego's pitching just smothered them all night. Reds never really threatened.
02
key player
Whoever San Diego ran out there was filthy. You don't throw a shutout at Great American Ball Park by accident, that place is a launching pad.
03
hot take
Reds getting blanked at home in a hitter's park? That's not a slump, that's a lineup that's checked out for the year.
04
deep cut
Reds have basically been playing out the string, but the Padres are 73-65 and treating September like it matters. You can see the urgency.
05
exit
Anyway, SD's stacking wins for the wild card push. Curious if they can keep it rolling on the road.
The recap
Padres pitching slammed the door in Cincinnati, riding the shutout to a clean 5-0 win on getaway day at Great American Ball Park. San Diego's starter got into his stuff early and the bullpen never let the Reds sniff a rally, holding that hitter-friendly yard scoreless all afternoon.
Five runs was plenty of cushion once the arms locked in. Cincinnati never solved it, and the Padres roll out of town with the sweep-clinching kind of vibe.
