San Diego PadresvsKansas City Royals
SD 6/KC 7
Things to say
The Royals walked off the Padres 7-6 in 10 innings at Kauffman Stadium.
01
opener
Royals-Padres went the distance, 7-6 in ten. San Diego had it and let it slip in the last frame. Kansas City walked it off.
02
key player
I'm not gonna hand you a name and pretend I clocked every at-bat, but whoever drove in that winning run in the tenth earned his beer tonight.
03
hot take
A 39-59 club has no business hanging a walk-off on a team fighting for a Wild Card. That's a bad look for San Diego.
04
deep cut
Extra innings means that automatic runner on second starts every half-inning now — free ducks on the pond both ways, and the Royals cashed theirs.
05
exit
One-run heartbreaker in extras always stings more. Padres gotta shake it off before the next one.
The recap
The Royals walked it off in the tenth to steal one from the Padres, 7-6, on a getaway day at Kauffman. San Diego had this thing in hand for most of the night, but the bullpen coughed up the lead late and let Kansas City claw back into it.
Once it went to extras, the home team had all the leverage, and they cashed it in the bottom of the tenth to send everybody home happy. Ugly loss for a Padres club that's scuffling right around .500.
