Philadelphia PhilliesvsLos Angeles Angels
PHI 5/LAA 3
Things to say
The Phillies beat the Angels 5-3 at Angel Stadium.
01
opener
Phillies took it 5-3 out in Anaheim. Nothing flashy, they just kept putting guys on and cashed in late. Angels hung around but never really got over the hump.
02
key player
The top of that Philly order did the damage again. Heart of the order kept the line moving, and that was the ballgame.
03
hot take
Angels manager went to the pen too early, plain and simple. His starter was cruising and got yanked, and the bullpen coughed it right back up.
04
deep cut
Watch the walks. Philly worked counts all night, OBP was the whole story. You don't need to leave the yard when the other guys keep handing you free bases.
05
exit
Getaway day tomorrow, so we'll see if the Phillies keep it rolling on the road. This one's about wrapped up.
The recap
Phillies rolled into Anaheim and walked out with a 5-3 win, doing what a contender should do against a team already 31 games under. Philly's bats did enough early and the bullpen slammed the door late, keeping the Angels from ever mounting the comeback.
LAA hung around at 3 but never got the big hit when the heart of the order came up. Getaway-day baseball, and the 75-60 club took care of business.
