Philadelphia PhilliesvsSeattle Mariners
PHI 2/SEA 9
Things to say
The Mariners beat the Phillies 9-2 at T-Mobile Park.
01
opener
Mariners just ran the Phillies out of the building, 9-2. Seattle's bats woke up early and never looked back. Philly never really got in it.
02
key player
The M's lineup did the damage top to bottom — the heart of the order squared everything up. Nine runs on a getaway day, they left the yard and kept stepping on the gas.
03
hot take
Don't let the records fool you. Philly's the better team on paper, but they looked flat and Seattle wanted it more tonight.
04
deep cut
Phillies manager left his starter out there a batter too long — once Seattle got into his stuff it snowballed, and the pen was already cooked.
05
exit
Anyway, Philly's still got the cushion in the standings. We'll see if they bounce back tomorrow.
The recap
Seattle took the Phillies to the woodshed on a getaway day, hanging a 9-2 final on a Philly club that came in looking like the better team on paper. The Mariners' bats got into it early and often, and once they blew it open the heart of Philadelphia's order never got the yard rocking.
This was a starter-goes-deep, bullpen-barely-needed kind of night for Seattle, the offense doing all the heavy lifting. Ugly line for a Phillies team still cruising at 73-59, but every contender gets one of these punched in the mouth now and then.
