Pittsburgh PiratesvsSt. Louis Cardinals
PIT 1/STL 4
Things to say
The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-1 at Busch Stadium.
01
opener
Cards took care of business at home, 4-1 over the Pirates. Low-scoring one where the pitching set the tone. Never really felt like Pittsburgh had the answer.
02
key player
Whoever St. Louis ran out there got into his stuff early and kept Pittsburgh's heart of the order quiet all night. One run allowed, that's a start you take every time.
03
hot take
One run in a nine-inning game? The Pirates' offense is going nowhere fast. You can't win when nobody's getting on base.
04
deep cut
Manager didn't panic and go to the pen too early — let the starter work, and the bullpen only had to close the door on a three-run cushion.
05
exit
Both of these clubs are hovering right around .500, so it's spoiler season now. Curious to see if the Cards can string a few together.
The recap
Cardinals took care of business at home, handling the Pirates 4-1 to nudge back to .500. Their starter set the tone early, working deep and keeping Pittsburgh's bats quiet outside of one run, and the bullpen slammed the door from there.
St. Louis did just enough at the plate, stringing together the timely hits while the Pirates couldn't get anything going against a well-worked outing.
Nothing flashy, just a clean, efficient win on the mound.
