Pittsburgh PiratesvsSan Diego Padres
PIT 3/SD 2
Things to say
The Pirates beat the Padres 3-2 in 12 innings at Petco Park.
01
opener
Pirates stole one in San Diego, 3-2 in twelve. Padres left the tying run on base like three times. Petco crowd went home cranky.
02
key player
Pittsburgh's bullpen was the real star. Zero runs after the starter walked, and the pen shut the heart of the order down all night.
03
hot take
San Diego went to the pen too early and it cost them. You leave your guy in with that stuff going.
04
deep cut
That's a rough one for the Padres in a getaway spot. Their OBP up and down the order just dried up in extras.
05
exit
Anyway, at 64-69 the Pirates aren't sniffing October, but they play these two again tomorrow. We'll see if San Diego bounces back.
The recap
Free baseball at Petco, and the Pirates were the ones who cashed in. This one went the distance to the twelfth, knotted at two before Pittsburgh finally pushed across the run that mattered.
The bullpens traded zeros for what felt like forever, and San Diego just couldn't get the big knock with the heart of the order due up. Pirates steal one on the road, 3-2, and the Padres are left kicking themselves after leaving the go-ahead run stranded all night.
