Pittsburgh PiratesvsSan Diego Padres
PIT 0/SD 3
Things to say
The Padres shut out the Pirates 3-0 at Petco Park.
01
opener
Padres took it 3-0 at home. Total pitcher's duel, nobody was squaring anything up. Pirates just never got a runner in scoring position when it mattered.
02
key player
San Diego's starter was flat nasty. Carved through the heart of the order all night and handed it off with the shutout intact.
03
hot take
Three runs shouldn't be enough to feel safe, but that Padres bullpen slammed the door. Honestly Pittsburgh's offense is the story here, not the pitching.
04
deep cut
Pirates got blanked, zero on the board. On a getaway day too, so that's a long flight out of San Diego feeling like that.
05
exit
San Diego's hanging around that Wild Card race. Anyway, let's see if they can carry it into the next series.
The recap
Padres blanked the Pirates 3-0 at Petco, and this one was all about the arms. San Diego's staff never let Pittsburgh's heart of the order get comfortable, scattering nothing across nine and slamming the door with a clean bullpen.
Three runs was plenty of cushion when the other side can't put a single crooked number on the board. Getaway shutout, the kind of tidy win that gets a club to 72-62 without breaking a sweat.
