Cincinnati RedsvsChicago Cubs
CIN 5/CHC 17
Things to say
The Cubs hammered the Reds 17-5 at Wrigley Field.
01
opener
Cubs just put a beating on Cincinnati, 17-5. It was a laugher by the fifth. The whole lineup left the yard.
02
key player
The heart of the order did the damage — Chicago's three-four-five hitters were on base all afternoon, and once they got into the Reds' bullpen it was over.
03
hot take
Cincy's manager went to the pen way too early and it cost him. You're down a couple, it's a getaway day, you let your starter wear it.
04
deep cut
Seventeen runs and the Cubs barely needed their starter to go deep — the bats bailed him out. That's the kind of OBP night that flatters a WHIP that didn't earn it.
05
exit
Anyway, at 77-59 the Cubs are rolling into October. Curious to see if the Reds can bounce back tomorrow.
The recap
Cubs turned Wrigley into a batting cage on getaway day, hanging 17 on Cincinnati in a 17-5 laugher. This one was over early — once the bats got going the lineup just kept turning over, and Reds manager was digging into the pen way too soon with nothing left to save.
Every spot in the order seemed to touch the ball, and Cincinnati never had an answer. At 77-59 the Cubs keep humming while the Reds limp home under .500.
