VMI KeydetsvsVirginia Tech Hokies
VMI 3/VT 73
Things to say
Virginia Tech smashed VMI 73-3 at Lane Stadium.
01
opener
Yeah, that one was over by the first quarter. Tech just steamrolled them, 73 to 3. VMI couldn't move the ball an inch.
02
key player
Grunkemeyer was surgical, 17 of 20 for 224 and two scores. You don't miss three passes all night against anybody and that's a problem for the rest of the ACC.
03
hot take
Honestly the field goal at the end was the only thing that kept it from being a shutout, and the backups were already in by then.
04
deep cut
The blocked punt returned for a touchdown was the real dagger. When your special teams are scoring too, it's just a bad day to be the visitor.
05
exit
Cupcake game, though. We'll see what they've actually got once the conference slate starts.
The recap
This was a woodshed beating from the jump — Virginia Tech hung 73 on VMI and the Keydets didn't get on the board until a garbage-time field goal with the game long buried. Ethan Grunkemeyer barely broke a sweat, going 17-of-20 for 224 and two scores, while Jeffrey Overton Jr. ran for 104 and a pair on the ground.
The turning point was basically the opening whistle: VT scored on offense, special teams took a blocked punt to the house, and VMI couldn't move the ball an inch all day. When your only points come from a 50-yard boot down 70, you know it was a long bus ride home.
