New York YankeesvsSan Diego Padres
NYY 5/SD 1
Things to say
The Yankees beat the Padres 5-1 at Petco Park.
01
opener
Yankees took it 5-1 in San Diego. Never really felt close after the middle innings. Petco played big and the Padres just couldn't string anything together.
02
key player
The Yankees starter was the story. Got into his stuff early, worked deep, and kept the heart of the Padres order off balance all night.
03
hot take
One run at home? That's on the bats, not the pitching. San Diego's lineup has been quietly punchless for weeks.
04
deep cut
Padres left the leadoff guy on in a couple of those early frames. You strand runners like that at home and it snowballs.
05
exit
Yankees are rolling at 81-61. San Diego's got some ground to make up down the stretch, so we'll see how they answer tomorrow.
The recap
The Yankees rolled into Petco and made it look easy, pinning a 5-1 loss on the Padres to take the series. New York's bats did their damage early and the arms took it from there, choking the life out of San Diego's lineup that only managed a single run all night.
The Padres just never got anything going against the heart of the Bronx attack. Getaway day belonged to the visitors, and now San Diego heads home stinging while New York keeps building on that 81-win pace.
