The morning line

EPL Today's marquee game is Newcastle United traveling to Elland Road to face Leeds United, with both sides sitting at 1-2-0 and eager to avoid slipping further down the table. Leeds get a slight betting edge at home, but Newcastle will be looking to string together a defense that can grind out a clean sheet or at least avoid handing over a sitter in front of goal. Watch for a tight, low-scoring affair that could easily end level if neither side finds the net early.

MLB The marquee tilt is Atlanta Braves at Chicago Cubs, a real wild-card jockeying game with Atlanta trying to hold its spot in the heart of a tight September and the Cubs looking to keep pace at home in front of the Wrigley faithful. Keep an eye on the bullpens late, since a getaway-day feel with the over/under sitting near nine runs suggests neither manager will be shy about going to the pen early if a starter gets into his stuff. Also worth a glance is Dodgers at Reds, where Los Angeles is padding a big lead atop the standings while trying to keep its rotation and OBP-heavy lineup sharp heading into the stretch run.

NFL Monday night's marquee game sends the Denver Broncos into Arrowhead Stadium to face the Kansas City Chiefs, with Kansas City favored by two and a half and the total sitting at 42.5. Early-season pride and the AFC West pecking order are at stake, and watch how each defense handles third-and-long against these two offenses in the red zone. If Denver can control time of possession and keep pace with the line of scrimmage, this one could go down to the wire instead of turning into garbage-time stats for either side.
