The morning line

MLS The marquee game tonight is FC Cincinnati hosting D.C. United at TQL Stadium, with Cincinnati the clear favorite on the moneyline as they look to shore up their playoff positioning down the stretch. D.C. United comes in with a losing record and little margin for error, so expect them to sit back and look for a counterattack rather than trade chances in the open. If Cincinnati can get an early through ball to find the net, this one could turn into a comfortable clean sheet rather than a nail-biter.

NBA The marquee game is Philadelphia 76ers at New York Knicks on NBC, with New York favored by 4.5 at the Garden as both teams look to open the season on the right foot. The real league-wide eye-catcher is Golden State Warriors at Los Angeles Lakers on ESPN, a nationally televised litmus test for whether the Lakers can keep buckets flowing against a Warriors backcourt that can get splash-happy in a hurry. Keep an eye on Oklahoma City Thunder at San Antonio Spurs too, a near pick'em on the road that could come down to who's got ice in their veins in crunch time.

NCAA Football The marquee matchup tonight is South Alabama at Marshall, with the Jaguars favored by a point and a half in a game that's drawing the number with a sky-high 66.5 over-under, so expect this one to turn into a smashmouth shootout rather than a defensive slog. Florida International is the other game worth a glance, laying double digits at home against Middle Tennessee, and if they can't move the ball early don't be surprised if it turns into garbage-time stats for the trailing side. Everything else on the slate is squarely in backup-generator territory, with Delaware and Sam Houston both fighting as home underdogs just trying to control time of possession and stay out of their own red zone mistakes.

NHL The marquee matchup is Tampa Bay Lightning at Vegas Golden Knights, a clash of two of the league's hottest starts with the Golden Knights' power play humming all month and the Lightning looking to prove their fast start is real on the road. Keep an eye on Boston Bruins at Dallas Stars too, where Boston's surprising 7-2-0 record gets tested against a Dallas squad that can turn a penalty kill into a shorthanded snipe in a blink. If either game heads to three minutes left in the third still tied, don't be shocked to see a goalie pulled and a scramble in the slot before anyone talks overtime winners.

WNBA The marquee game is the Golden State Valkyries heading into Atlanta to face the Dream, two of the WNBA's best squads trading buckets all year with the Valkyries sitting 32-12 and Atlanta right behind at 30-14. Vegas has the Dream as 3.5-point favorites at home, but Golden State has the better record and plenty of firepower to steal one on the road. Watch for whoever gets hot from deep early, because a game with this much on the line could come down to a dagger three in crunch time.
