St. Louis CardinalsvsChicago Cubs
STL 8/CHC 4
Things to say
The Cardinals beat the Cubs 8-4 at Wrigley Field.
01
opener
Cards took it 8-4 at Wrigley. St. Louis just kept the line moving all afternoon. Cubs never really got their bats going.
02
key player
The heart of that Cardinals order was cooking, they put up a four-spot in the middle innings and Chicago couldn't answer.
03
hot take
Cubs skipper went to the pen way too early. That starter still had plenty in the tank and it cost them the game.
04
deep cut
Wrigley on a getaway day with the wind blowing out, and STL made it hurt, a couple balls left the yard that don't carry anywhere else.
05
exit
Anyway, big divisional swing. Curious to see if the Cubs bounce back next series or if this one lingers.
The recap
The Cardinals rolled into Wrigley on a getaway day and left with a statement, hanging 8 on the Cubs to snap out of their funk. The bats woke up early and never let Chicago back into it, with the heart of the order doing the damage and the pen closing the door clean once they had the lead.
Cubs kept it a two-run game for a bit but couldn't string anything together against St. Louis, and 4 runs just wasn't going to cut it.
A quiet, tidy road win for a Cardinals team that badly needed one at .500.
