San Diego PadresvsCleveland Guardians
SD 5/CLE 0
Things to say
The San Diego Padres beat the Cleveland Guardians 5-0 at Progressive Field.
01
opener
Padres took it 5-0 in Cleveland. Total shutout, Guardians never got anything going. Kind of a snoozer if you weren't rooting for San Diego.
02
key player
The San Diego starter was the story—goose egg all afternoon, hitters just couldn't get into his stuff.
03
hot take
A zero at home tells you the Guardians' bats are dead. Sixty-five losses doesn't lie.
04
deep cut
On a getaway day the pen barely got tested—that's how you know the starter went deep and did his job.
05
exit
San Diego's rolling at 67-58, so I'll see where they sit after the next series.
The recap
Padres rolled into Cleveland and slapped a 5-0 shutout on the Guardians, and this one was never really in doubt. San Diego's arms carried the night, keeping Cleveland's bats quiet from the first pitch and never letting the heart of the order get comfortable.
Five runs is plenty when the pitching is dealing like that, and the Guardians just couldn't scratch anything across. Getaway-day win for San Diego, who keep their grip on the better half of that 67-58 record while Cleveland drops to 60-65.
