San Diego PadresvsTampa Bay Rays
SD 4/TB 5
Things to say
The Rays beat the Padres 5-4 in 11 innings at the Trop.
01
opener
Rays walked it off in the 11th, 5-4. One of those games where nobody wanted to blink. Free baseball on a getaway day, and Tampa found a way.
02
key player
The Tampa pen was the story — kept it knotted through extras and never gave the heart of the Padres order anything to hit. Bend-don't-break stuff all night.
03
hot take
San Diego's got the record but they play scared in one-run games. You leave that many guys on base, extra innings is gonna bite you.
04
deep cut
Watch the tempo — both starters went deep and kept pitch counts down, which is why this thing even got to the 11th with the good arms still available.
05
exit
Rays are 28 over .500 now — I'd circle their next series and see if this club's for real come October.
The recap
Rays and Padres went the distance at the Trop, tied up and grinding into the 11th before Tampa finally walked it off 5-4. This one had bullpen written all over it — both pens got stretched thin once the starters handed it off, and every reliever was pitching with the game on the line.
San Diego kept clawing back to force extras, but the Rays got the walk-off knock when it mattered and sent everybody home happy. Getaway-day baseball at its most nerve-wracking, and Tampa's the one that survived it.
