Tampa Bay RaysvsBoston Red Sox
TB 6/BOS 7
Things to say
The Red Sox edged the Rays 7-6 at Fenway.
01
opener
Sox took a one-run game, 7-6, at Fenway. Back-and-forth all night. That's a good win against a team that's been running away with it.
02
key player
Somebody in the heart of the order came up big in that one — you don't put up seven on a getaway day without the middle of the lineup doing damage.
03
hot take
Tampa's got the better record, 56-41, but they let this one slip. When you're that good you don't drop one-run games in Boston.
04
deep cut
One-run final in a park like Fenway usually comes down to the pen. Somebody's manager left a guy in a batter too long and it cost him.
05
exit
Anyway, it's a series — curious if the Rays punch back tomorrow or if Boston's got their number this week.
The recap
Fenway got a thriller with Boston edging Tampa Bay 7-6 in a back-and-forth slugfest. The Rays came in the hotter team, but the bats woke up for the home side and somebody in the heart of the order kept leaving balls in the gaps all night.
Both bullpens were living on the edge late, and Boston squeezed across the winning run to steal one from a division favorite. Ugly, close, and exactly the kind of getaway-day win that keeps a .500 club hanging around.
