Red Bull New YorkvsAtlanta United FC
RBNY 1/ATL 2
Things to say
Atlanta United beat Red Bull New York 2-1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
01
opener
Atlanta finally got a home win, 2-1 over the Red Bulls. Been a rough season for them, so they'll take it. Good atmosphere in that building.
02
key player
Miranchuk was the difference-maker for Atlanta. Led the shots, kept getting on the ball in dangerous spots. Guy's worth the money when he's switched on.
03
hot take
New York had the better record coming in and still lost. That's a squad that flatters to deceive on the road.
04
deep cut
Junior Alonso quietly ran the back line, 15 defensive interventions. Nobody talks about him but he held that thing together.
05
exit
Anyway, still an uphill climb for Atlanta in the standings. Long way to go before playoff talk.
The recap
Atlanta finally got one to go their way, edging Red Bull New York 2-1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium to snap out of their misery for a night. This one had two goals in the bank early and turned into a proper scrap, with Alexey Miranchuk buzzing around and peppering the net all evening.
New York got one back to make it nervy, but Lucas Hoyos slammed the door with a couple of key stops down the stretch. It's just three points, but for a side sitting bottom of the pile, beating a playoff-chasing Red Bull outfit is the kind of win you take and run with.
