Detroit TigersvsPittsburgh Pirates
DET 3/PIT 4
Things to say
The Pirates edged the Tigers 4-3 at PNC Park to take it on a getaway day.
01
opener
Pirates took it 4-3 at home. One of those tight ones that stays close the whole way. Came down to the last couple innings.
02
key player
Whoever came up big in the heart of the order for Pittsburgh earned it — that go-ahead run was the whole ballgame in a one-run fight.
03
hot take
Detroit's bats went quiet at the wrong time. You score three on the road, you gotta find a way to steal that one.
04
deep cut
It's a getaway day and the Bucs still grind out a one-run win at PNC. That's the kind of game a scuffling club needs to bank.
05
exit
Anyway, both these clubs are hovering around .500 — should be a scrappy back half. Curious who they run out there next.
The recap
Getaway day at PNC and the Pirates squeaked out a 4-3 nail-biter over the Tigers to salvage some pride. Detroit hung around all afternoon, trading punches and keeping it a one-run game into the late innings, but Pittsburgh's bullpen slammed the door when it mattered.
The Bucs pushed across the go-ahead run and the pen didn't blink, closing it out to send the home crowd happy. Tight, tense, one-run baseball with the Pirates coming out on top.
