The morning line

MLB The marquee game tonight is the Philadelphia Phillies at the Atlanta Braves from Truist Park, a late-season tilt with playoff seeding on the line as the Braves try to hold home-field edge over a Phillies club that's been getting the heart of the order going lately. Keep an eye on the bullpens if either starter doesn't work deep into the game, since a shaky inning from the pen could flip this one fast. With Atlanta favored at home, a Phillies starter who goes seven and keeps Atlanta's lineup off the board would be the headline if Philadelphia pulls the road upset.

MLS The night's lone marquee matchup sends Sporting Kansas City to Lumen Field to face the Seattle Sounders FC, with Seattle the heavy favorite at home and looking to keep their playoff positioning solid down the stretch. Kansas City enters with a rough road record and will need a clean sheet plus a bit of magic on a counterattack to leave with anything. If it stays nil-nil into the late stages, watch for the Sounders to lean on a well-timed through ball to finally find the net in stoppage time.

NCAA Football The marquee matchup is Pittsburgh Panthers at Virginia Tech Hokies, a battle of unbeatens where the Hokies are favored by three and a half points with a over-under near fifty-five, so expect this one to come down to who controls time of possession and can finish drives in the red zone instead of settling for field goals. Penn State at Northwestern is the other game worth watching, with the Nittany Lions favored on the road against a Wildcats team that could keep it close if their defense bails them out on third-and-long. Keep an eye on the spread in both games — if either favorite jumps out early and starts piling up garbage-time stats, it covers easily and the over comes into play.

NHL The marquee matchup is Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden, with the Lightning favored on the road and the Rangers looking to bounce back after dropping their opener. Keep an eye on the power play battles all night, since several of these teams are still finding their penalty kill chemistry early in the season, and a late power play goal from the slot could decide more than one of these games. Also worth watching: Edmonton Oilers at Vancouver Canucks, a potential track meet with a 6.5 over-under where a goalie might get pulled if things get out of hand in the third.

WNBA The marquee tonight is Indiana Fever at Las Vegas Aces, with Vegas favored by four and a half as they protect home floor against a Fever squad that's been finding buckets all series. Golden State's Valkyries host Dallas the following night as heavy favorites, but don't sleep on the Wings sneaking in for a dagger if Vegas or Golden State can't buy a bucket early. Either way, expect ice-in-the-veins finishes with both home teams favored to keep their paint dominance rolling.
